Opportunities for Investing in Honduras

Honduras is seeking investment in a wide range of industrial, service, and agricultural sectors. A recurring theme for desired new investment is to seek opportunities and technologies that add value to Honduran natural resources before exporting them.

Infrastructure Development. Honduras has major infrastructure needs. Increased U.S. direct investment will greatly improve the development of efficient, reliable systems for power generation, water, sewage, transportation, and telecommunications.

Energy demand, also, is increasing. Expanding energy service capacity is a critical need.

Tourism. The tourism development potential of Honduras is enormous. In 2004, the Washington Post listed Honduras as one of the top 10 ecotourism destinations in the world. There are attractions to suit all tastes, from beaches and reefs, to ancient Maya ruins, national parks in the mountains, jungles rivers and stunning lakes.

Annual tourist visits rise strongly every year, reaching 1.2 million in 2005. Substantial domestic and foreign direct investment in a variety of tourism projects suggests this industry sector will continue to be one of Honduras’ top performers.
